Real Closeness Lets You Be Honest, Even Cheeky

ਹਮ ਗੋਰੂ ਤੁਮ ਗੁਆਰ ਗੁਸਾਈ ਜਨਮ ਜਨਮ ਰਖਵਾਰੇ ॥
ham goroo tum gu-aar gusaa-ee janam janam rakhvaaray.
I am a cow, and You are the herdsman, the Sustainer of the World. You are my Saving Grace, lifetime after lifetime.
ਕਬਹੂੰ ਨ ਪਾਰਿ ਉਤਾਰਿ ਚਰਾਇਹੁ ਕੈਸੇ ਖਸਮ ਹਮਾਰੇ ॥੨॥
kabahooN na paar utaar charaa-ihu kaisay khasam hamaaray. ||2||
You have never taken me across to graze there - what sort of a herdsman are You? ||2||

In plain words

I'm like a cow, and You are my gentle herder who has watched over me faithfully.

So lead me at last to the good, green pasture — the peace I've been longing for.

Real closeness lets you be honest — even a little cheeky — like a beloved child who feels totally safe.
The deeper layer

Real closeness lets you be honest with the One, even a little cheeky.

Kabir gives a gentle picture. Ham goroo tum gu-aar — I am a cow, and You are the herder. Gu-aar is someone who takes cows out to the fields and brings them home safely. The One has watched over Kabir faithfully, janam janam, life after life.

Then comes a playful complaint. Kabahoon na paar utaar charaa-ihu — You have never taken me across to the good field to graze. What kind of herder are You? Kabir is asking the One to lead him all the way home, to the green field of peace he has longed for.

It is a lovely way to pray. It is not stiff or formal. Think of a child who says, "Hey, when is it my turn?" That child feels safe and loved enough to ask. Real closeness can be that honest.

A Question to Sit With

Do you have someone you feel so safe with that you can be completely honest, even playfully complain?
