The Only Lasting Honor Is the Name in the Heart

ਸਚ ਨਾਮਿ ਪਤਿ ਊਪਜੈ ਕਰਮਿ ਨਾਮੁ ਕਰਤਾਰੁ ॥
sach naam pat oopjai karam naam kartaar.
Honor comes from the True Name, the Name of the Merciful Creator.
ਅਹਿਨਿਸਿ ਹਿਰਦੈ ਜੇ ਵਸੈ ਨਾਨਕ ਨਦਰੀ ਪਾਰੁ ॥੪॥੧॥੩੧॥
ahinis hirdai jay vasai naanak nadree paar. ||4||1||31||
If it abides in the heart, day and night, O Nanak, then the mortal shall swim across, by His Grace. ||4||1||31||

In plain words

Real honor comes only from the True Name of the merciful Maker.

Let it live in your heart, day and night, and — says Nanak — by grace you will swim across.

The only honor that lasts comes from the Name living in your heart — and grace carries you across.
The deeper layer

After three rounds of "thousands", Guru Nanak gives the answer: the only honor that lasts comes from the Name.

Sach naam pat oopjai — honor grows from the True Name. That honor is not handed out by armies, bank accounts or famous schools. It comes when the Name lives ahinis hirdai, in the heart, day and night.

Even then, the crossing happens nadree — by the One's kind glance, by grace. Gurbani often pictures life as a wide ocean to swim across. Think of a swimmer who has trained well but still needs the lifeguard's hand at the end. Honor is received first, and then mercy carries you across.

A Question to Sit With

What gives a person worth that no one could ever take away?
