The Name Is the Only Last Rite You Need

ਪਿੰਡੁ ਪਤਲਿ ਮੇਰੀ ਕੇਸਉ ਕਿਰਿਆ ਸਚੁ ਨਾਮੁ ਕਰਤਾਰੁ ॥

The Lord is my festive dish, of rice balls on leafy plates; the True Name of the Creator Lord is my funeral ceremony.

Here and hereafter, in the past and in the future, this is my support. ||2||

Translation by Dr. Sant Singh Khalsa

In plain words

The One is my feast and my funeral rite alike; the True Name is the only last ceremony I need.

Here, hereafter, past and future — this is my one support.

The Name is the only last rite you need — it holds you here and hereafter alike.
The deeper layer

Nanak replaces the elaborate funeral offerings (the pind, rice balls on leaf-plates given for the dead) with the One itself: "the True Name of the Creator is my funeral ceremony." No ritual is needed beyond the Name, which supports the soul across every time — "here and hereafter, past and future." This is the Inward Turn applied to the rites of death.

A Question to Sit With

What is something so steady it would support you through anything?
