Each Virtue Worn Steadies the Restless Mind

ਹਰਿ ਹਰਿ ਹਾਰੁ ਕੰਠਿ ਲੇ ਪਹਿਰੈ ਦਾਮੋਦਰੁ ਦੰਤੁ ਲੇਈ ॥
har har haar kanth lay pahirai daamodar dant lay-ee.
If the bride wears the garland of the Lord's Name, Har, Har, around her neck, and if she uses the toothbrush of the Lord;
ਕਰ ਕਰਿ ਕਰਤਾ ਕੰਗਨ ਪਹਿਰੈ ਇਨ ਬਿਧਿ ਚਿਤੁ ਧਰੇਈ ॥੨॥
kar kar kartaa kangan pahirai in biDh chit Dharay-ee. ||2||
and if she fashions and wears the bracelet of the Creator Lord around her wrist, then she shall hold her consciousness steady. ||2||

In plain words

Let the bride wear the Name as her necklace. Let her keep herself clean with the thought of the One.

Let her slip the Maker's bracelet onto her wrist. Then her mind will hold steady.

Each virtue you "wear" quietly steadies the restless mind.
The deeper layer

Each thing the bride puts on is really a way of keeping the One close, and it makes her mind calm.

Guru Nanak keeps going through her morning routine. Her necklace is the Name: har har haar kanth lay pahirai, she wears the Name of the One around her neck. Her toothbrush, the daily cleaning, is remembering the One. Her bracelet is the Creator, kartaa, the Maker of all.

What does all this do? It is not beauty just for show. The result is a steady mind. In biDh chit Dharay-ee — in this way she holds her mind still.

Think of brushing your teeth every day. One day does not do much. Doing it every day keeps you healthy. These ornaments work the same way. Each good quality she wears settles her restless mind a little more.

A Question to Sit With

What small daily habit helps settle your mind?
