Night and day, they meditate within their hearts on the Lord's Name; through the Word of the Guru's Shabad, they know the One Lord. ||1||Pause||

Translation by Dr. Sant Singh Khalsa

In plain words

Those who hold tight to the root become true;

day and night they keep the Name in their hearts, and through the Word they come to know the One.

Hold tight to the root, and you stay connected to everything that matters.
The deeper layer

Stay close to the root, and you stay connected to everything.

This is the Rahao, the "pause" line at the center of the shabad. Mool laagay say jan parvaan — those who hold on to the root are accepted. Mool means root. The root is the One. Everything else grows out of it like branches.

Think of a tree. Hold the root, and you are joined to the whole tree: trunk, branches and fruit. Let go of the root for one branch, and you hold nothing that lasts. These people keep the Name in their hearts day and night. Through the gur sabad, the Guru's Word, they come to know the One.

A Question to Sit With

What is the "root" in your life that everything else grows from?
