Living Turned From Your Source Is a Slow Burning

ਨਾਮ ਵਿਹੂਣ ਗਰਭ ਗਲਿ ਜਾਇ ॥
naam vihoon garabh gal jaa-ay.
Those who lack the Naam, the Name of the Lord, are dissolved within the womb.
ਬਿਰਥਾ ਜਨਮੁ ਦੂਜੈ ਲੋਭਾਇ ॥
birthaa janam doojai lobhaa-ay.
Useless is the birth of those who are lured by duality.
ਨਾਮ ਬਿਹੂਣੀ ਦੁਖਿ ਜਲੈ ਸਬਾਈ ॥
naam bihoonee dukh jalai sabaa-ee.
Without the Naam, all are burning in pain.

In plain words

Those without the Name are lost before they even begin. A life pulled along by separateness is wasted.

Without the Name, everyone burns in pain.

The perfect Guru has made me understand this.

Living turned away from your source is a kind of slow burning — and understanding is the way out.
The deeper layer

Living turned away from your Source is like a slow burn, and understanding is the way out.

The hard picture continues. A life doojai lobhaa-ay, pulled along by something other than the One, is wasted. And without the Name, everyone is burning in pain. Think of a plant kept in a dark closet, away from the sun. It wilts because it is cut off from what feeds it.

That burning belongs to everyone who lives turned away from their Source. It is not a special curse. And the way out that Guru Amar Das offers is understanding, not fear. Satgur poorai boojh bujhaa-ee — the Perfect True Guru has given me this understanding.

A Question to Sit With

What understanding has cooled a pain you used to carry?
