As Gurmukh, I chant and recite the Glorious Praises of the Lord. ||1||

Translation by Dr. Sant Singh Khalsa

In plain words

I sing the One's praises, and through the Word I speak them.

Turned toward the Guru, I chant and recite the praises of the One.

Praise is not just talk about the One — it is a practice that prepares the heart.
The deeper layer

A simple opening of praise — singing, speaking, chanting, all through the Word and the Gurmukh orientation. Guru Ram Das often begins in pure praise before turning to the deeper teaching; the praising itself is the practice that prepares the heart for what follows.

A Question to Sit With

How does it change your mood to spend time appreciating, rather than wanting?
