Even the Love That Sweetens Practice Is a Gift

ਹਰਿ ਹਰਿ ਹਰਿ ਜਸੁ ਜਪੈ ਵਡਭਾਗੀ ॥
har har har jas japai vadbhaagee.
The very fortunate ones chant the Praises of the Lord, Har, Har, Har.
ਨਾਨਕ ਗੁਰਮਤਿ ਨਾਮਿ ਲਿਵ ਲਾਗੀ ॥੪॥੮॥੬੦॥
naanak gurmat naam liv laagee. ||4||8||60||
O Nanak, through the Guru's Teachings, one embraces love for the Naam. ||4||8||60||

Translation by Dr. Sant Singh Khalsa

In plain words

The very fortunate ones sing the praises of the One.

Says Nanak: through the Guru's teaching, one comes to love the Name.

Even the love that makes the practice sweet is something the Guru awakens in you.
The deeper layer

Even the love that makes the practice sweet is a gift.

Har har har jas japai vadbhaagee — the very fortunate ones sing the One's praises. Singing is shown as a blessing, a stroke of good fortune.

Naanak gurmat naam liv laagee — says Nanak, through the Guru's teaching, one comes to love the Name. Liv means a loving attention that stays fixed, like a sunflower that keeps turning to the sun.

The shabad began with a hunger for the Name. It ends with the answer: a love that the Guru wakes up in us. We do not make that love ourselves. It is given.

A Question to Sit With

What is a love you didn't manufacture, but that grew in you over time?
