Some Loves Are Like a Fish and Water

Such is the devotional love which has been produced in my mind.

Without the Lord, I cannot live even for an instant, like the fish which dies without water. ||1||Pause||

In plain words

This is the love that has welled up in my mind.

Without the One I cannot live even an instant. I am like a fish that dies without water.

Some loves are like a fish and water — without it, you simply cannot live.
The deeper layer

Some love is so strong that you cannot live without it, like a fish without water.

This is the Rahao, the "pause" line, the center of the shabad. Mayrai man aisee bhagat ban aa-ee — this kind of loving devotion has grown in my mind. Jaisay jal bin meen mar jaa-ee — like a fish that dies without water.

A fish out of water is not just uncomfortable. It cannot live. Think of how you need to breathe. You do not remember air only on Sundays. You need it every second. The soul that has tasted this love feels the same about the One. It cannot bear to be apart, not even for a moment. This is viraha, the deep ache of missing the One you love.

A Question to Sit With

What is so essential to you that you'd feel like a fish out of water without it?
