Translation by Dr. Sant Singh Khalsa
The One is deep inside every heart and everywhere outside too — hidden and shown at once.
Long, long before anything at all, there was only the One, resting in a great quiet.
No books, no worlds, no anything — just the One, alone in a deep calm.
Only the One knows what that was like; it's an ocean too deep to measure.
One of the Vaar's most awe-filled Paurees, reaching back before all creation: "for thirty-six ages He created the darkness, abiding in the void... there were no Vedas, Puraanas or Shaastras there — only the Lord Himself existed... sitting in absolute trance." This is a meditation on the One before there was anything — no scriptures, no worlds, no time, just the One resting in profound stillness (sunn, the fertile void). It invites vismaad, wonder — the mind stretching toward a beginning it cannot picture. And it plants a seed of humility: "only He Himself knows His state." We came from an unfathomable deep. For a child: before there was anything at all — before stars, before the earth, before time — there was just the One, resting in a great quiet. Everything came out of that.
What do you imagine there was, before there was anything?
