Chasing Shiny Things Leaves the Heart No Rest

bihaagarhaa mehlaa 4.
Bihaagraa, Fourth Mehl:
Those who do not remember the Name of the Lord, Har, Har, O my soul - those self-willed manmukhs are foolish and ignorant.
jo mohi maa-i-aa chit laa-iday mayree jindurhee-ay say ant ga-ay pachhutaanay raam.
Those who attach their consciousness to emotional attachment and Maya, O my soul, depart regretfully in the end.
har dargeh dho-ee naa lahniH mayree jindurhee-ay jo manmukh paap lubhaanay raam.
They find no place of rest in the Court of the Lord, O my soul; those self-willed manmukhs are deluded by sin.

O servant Nanak, those who meet the Guru are saved, O my soul; chanting the Name of the Lord, they are absorbed in the Name of the Lord. ||1||

In plain words

When we forget the One and lean only on shiny things, we end up feeling tangled and a little lost.

Chasing only getting-and-having can leave a person sad at the end of the day.

That kind of heart doesn't find a resting place, because it's running on empty and running the wrong way.

But meeting real wisdom, we're set right — remembering the One, we melt back into what we belong to.

Chasing only shiny things leaves the heart with no resting place — but real wisdom sets us right.
The deeper layer

This shabad sets the manmukh (self-turned) and gurmukh (One-turned) side by side, a favorite structure of Guru Ram Das. Pauri 0 diagnoses the self-turned state gently: attaching "consciousness to Maya" — to only the getting-and-having — leaves one "departing regretfully" and finding "no place of rest." The qMonk voice avoids the harsh "foolish, deluded by sin" of a literal reading, translating the condition (tangled, running on empty, running the wrong way) rather than labeling the person. The turn comes with the Guru: "meeting the Guru they are saved... absorbed in the Name." The word samaae — absorbed, merged, melting back in — is the resolution the whole shabad drives toward.

A Question to Sit With

What is something you chased hard, only to find it didn't fill you up the way you'd hoped?
