Translation by Dr. Sant Singh Khalsa
In every place and every space between, the Great Giver is there, filling it all.
No one can measure the One — the wonderful Maker who shapes how everything unfolds.
The One cares for every living thing, the way a good mother and father cherish their child.
No clever trick can grab hold of the One — but a loving heart comes to know the One quietly, from the inside.
The shabad — and the whole first set of six (Chhakaa 1) — closes on tenderness and immensity together. Thaan thanantar — "in the places and interspaces" — the Great Giver is everywhere, in every spot and every gap between spots; there is no crack the One is absent from. Ant na paaeeai — no limit can be found; the One is the karta "Architect of Destiny." Then the melting image: the One "cherishes all beings as mother and father cherish their child" — cosmic vastness and parental tenderness in a single breath. The closing wisdom is the shabad's summary and a caution against pride: lakh chaturaaee — "by thousands of clever tricks He cannot be obtained." Cleverness fails where love succeeds; the gurmukh "comes to know" not by outsmarting but by loving. Chhakaa 1 marks the seal of the first group of six shabads.
What does it feel like to be cherished — and how might the whole world be held that way?
