Translation by Dr. Sant Singh Khalsa
With the help of good company, I found the One I was missing.
My deep wishes were filled, my heart grew calm, and the restless fire inside went quiet.
What a day, what a night — full of more joy than I can count!
The Beloved was there all along, more wonderful than any words I have.
The doubt and grasping and clinging fall away, and I sing for joy with my friends.
I'm so grateful to whoever led me home to the One.
The shabad resolves in joy — the long longing answered. "My desires are fulfilled, my mind is at peace, the fire within is quenched." The "fire" is trisnaa, the burning of craving; remembrance puts it out. Notice the day and night that were sleepless with longing (P0) are now "fruitful" and "beauteous," full of "countless joys" — the very same time, transformed by the meeting. And the joy is shared: "joining with my companions, I sing the songs of joy." The verse ends in gratitude to the Saint/Guru "who led me to merge with the Lord" — the resolution is received, credited to grace and good company, never claimed as personal achievement. For a child: after a long ache of missing, the reunion is pure gladness — and the sleepless nights turn out to have been worth it.
Can you remember the happiness of finally getting back something (or someone) you'd been missing?
