Raag Dhanaasaree
Commentary

Raag Dhanaasaree, Chhant, Mehl 5 (Guru Arjan)

The Name is a place to stand for the one with nothing to hold; the One lifts up exactly those the world pushes down.

The Arc

Guru Arjan closes the Chhant set with a hymn of shelter and lifting-up. It opens in gentle company — the teaching kind to the overlooked, the sweet Name shared among good people, fears and knots coming undone. Then the great refuge lines: the Name as the support of the unsupported, the world-ocean crossed in a single instant, the Guru's wisdom as a healing balm that lets one see the One everywhere. The One reaches out and draws the empty-handed close, lifts up the lowly, and dwells in all as Creator, Enjoyer, and Contemplator at once. It ends on the Name beyond price and the humble wish to sit among good people.

Key Vocabulary

  • deen da-i-aal: merciful to the meek
  • nidhri-aa Dhar: the support of the unsupported
  • gur gi-aan naytree anjno: the Guru's wisdom as healing collyrium for the eyes
  • neech thaapanhaari-aa: the One who lifts up and establishes the lowly
  • aap kartaa aap bhugtaa: Himself Creator, Himself Enjoyer
  • naam amola-ee: the Name beyond price
  • Dhoor saaDhoo: the dust of the Saints' feet

Themes and Cross-Connections

Neech thaapanhaari-aa — the One who establishes precisely those the world ranks last — is a central thread of the whole project, from Ravidas's cobbler-dignity to Sorath's "dignity below the world's ranking." Aap kartaa aap bhugtaa is oneness pictured from every angle, the aapay vision met across the raags. The healing balm on the eyes (anjan) rejoins Dhanaasaree's Name-as-medicine keynote.

For Raag Dhanaasaree

The raag of longing closes here as a raag of homecoming and welcome: the reaching heart not merely soothed but drawn to the hem of the robe and lifted up.

Translation Notes

The images of Death's noose and the "knot of death" untied are rendered as fears loosening and tangled worries coming undone, keeping Death-terror out of the child text. "Worthless, lowly, helpless" is rendered as empty-handedness per the project's self-abasement rule.
