I chant the Ambrosial Bani of the Word from the depths of my heart, and I have instructed my soul. ||1||Pause||

Translation by Dr. Sant Singh Khalsa

In plain words

I will not be pulled back again. I have come home, and here I stay.

From deep in my heart I sing the sweet Word, and gently I teach my own soul.

You quiet the restless soul from the inside — with a song sung from the heart.
The deeper layer

You quiet a restless soul from the inside, with a song sung from the heart.

This is the rahaa-o, the "pause" line, the center of the shabad. Paachhai bahur na aavan paava-o: I will not be pulled back again. It describes a heart that has come home and stays settled.

How? Amrit banee ghat tay uchara-o: I sing the amrit banee, the nectar-sweet Word, from deep in my heart. Aatam ka-o samjhaava-o: and I gently teach my own soul. Think of humming a favorite song to calm yourself before a big test. The calm comes from inside.

A Question to Sit With

What's something you sometimes need to gently remind your own heart?
