The Name Is the Perfect Medicine

har har japan japa-o din raatee jap har har har ur Dhaaree.
I chant the chant of the Name of the Lord, day and night; I chant the Name of the Lord, Har, Har, Har, and enshrine it within my heart.
The Name of the Lord, Har, Har, Har, is the most perfect medicine in this world; chanting the Name of the Lord, Har, Har, I have conquered my ego. ||3||

In plain words

Day and night I keep the One in mind and hold that remembrance close in my heart.

The Name is the perfect medicine for the whole world — and holding it, the tight, prickly feeling of ‘me above everyone’ finally eases.

The Name works like medicine — it heals the ache of feeling separate.
The deeper layer

The Name of the One works like medicine for the whole world.

Har har har a-ukhaDh jag pooraa — the Name is the complete medicine for the world. Jap har har ha-umai maaree — remembering the Name, the ego grows still. Ha-umai is the "me first" feeling, the voice that says I matter more than everyone else. Sikh teaching treats it as a sickness to heal. So medicine is just the right picture. Medicine helps you get well. It is never a punishment.

How do you take this medicine? Ur Dhaaree — you keep the Name in your heart. Think of a photo of someone you love on your phone's lock screen. You see it again and again all day. Keeping the One close like that, day and night, is called simran, loving remembrance.

A Question to Sit With

When your mind feels tangled up, what helps it settle back down?
