Free In The Midst Of Family Life

ਸਚਿ ਸਿਮਰਿਐ ਹੋਵੈ ਪਰਗਾਸੁ ॥
sach simri-ai hovai pargaas.
Remembering the True Lord in meditation, one is enlightened.
ਤਾ ਤੇ ਬਿਖਿਆ ਮਹਿ ਰਹੈ ਉਦਾਸੁ ॥
taa tay bikhi-aa meh rahai udaas.
Then, in the midst of Maya, he remains detached.
ਸਤਿਗੁਰ ਕੀ ਐਸੀ ਵਡਿਆਈ ॥
satgur kee aisee vadi-aa-ee.
Such is the Glory of the True Guru;
ਪੁਤ੍ਰ ਕਲਤ੍ਰ ਵਿਚੇ ਗਤਿ ਪਾਈ ॥੨॥
putar kaltar vichay gat paa-ee. ||2||
in the midst of children and spouses, they attain emancipation. ||2||

In plain words

Holding the true One lights you up inside.

Then, right in the middle of the world's glitter, you stay unhooked. Here is the wonder: among children and family, freedom is found.

You do not have to leave everyday life to find freedom; you find it right inside it.
The deeper layer

You find freedom right in the middle of family life.

Sach simri-ai hovai pargaas — remembering the True One brings light. Bikhi-aa meh rahai udaas — then a person stays unhooked, even in the middle of Maya, the world's glitter and pull. It is like walking past a shop full of shiny toys and feeling happy just to look.

The most surprising line is putar kaltar vichay gat paa-ee — freedom is found right among children and spouse. This is the Sikh way of the householder. You do not run away from the world to find the One. You find the One inside ordinary family life, at the dinner table and on the school run.

A Question to Sit With

How could you stay peaceful inside even on a busy, noisy day?
