In plain words

Sometimes we drift into habits that leave us feeling small and ashamed.

We turn away from the wise and the good. We run toward what pulls us down. How easily these become our everyday ways.

A habit is just a path worn by repetition — and a new path can be worn just the same.
The deeper layer

Habits grow from what we do again and again, and habits can change.

Jih karnee hoveh sarmindaa ihaa kamaanee reet — you have made a habit of the deeds that bring you shame. Reet means habit, a way of doing things. Here is the habit, named plainly: speaking badly of holy people, sant kee nindaa, and looking up to people who care for nothing true.

The aim is to notice the pattern in ourselves, not to condemn anyone. Think of a path worn across a lawn. People walked the same way so many times that the grass wore away. A habit is like that path. A new path can be worn the same way, one step at a time.

A Question to Sit With

What is one small habit you would like to gently turn in a better direction?
