Translation by Dr. Sant Singh Khalsa
The moment I took hold of the One's shelter, I was set free.
By the kindness of the holy, I sang the One's praise again and again, and the troubles that clung to me let go.
Hold on to the One, and you are set free.
This is the Rahao, the "pause" line at the center of the shabad, and it answers the opening question. Parabh kee ot gahee ta-o chhooto — I took hold of the One's support, ot, and at once I was free. What effort could not do alone, one good handhold did.
It is like being in a strong river current. Instead of fighting the water, you grab a rope held from the shore.
Bikhai bi-aaDh tab hooto — then the troubles that clung to me were gone. They left because I held on to something steadier, not because I fought them. And this came saaDh parsaad, through the kindness of holy people.
What is a steady thing you can hold onto when everything feels overwhelming?
