The Name Is What Truly Soothes the Mind

ਪ੍ਰਭ ਜੀ ਕੋ ਨਾਮੁ ਜਪਤ ਮਨ ਚੈਨ ॥
parabh jee ko naam japat man chain.
Chanting the Name of God, the mind is soothed and pacified.
baho parkaar khojeh sabh taa ka-o bikham na jaa-ee lain. ||1|| rahaa-o.
Everyone searches for Him in different ways, but the search is so difficult, and He cannot be found. ||1||Pause||

Translation by Dr. Sant Singh Khalsa

In plain words

When you say the Naam of the One, the mind finds rest.

Everyone searches in so many different ways, and still the One is hard to find.

The mind grows calm not by searching harder but by resting in the Name.
The deeper layer

Holding the Name brings the mind rest.

This is the Rahao, the "pause" line at the center of the shabad. It answers the list of outward acts. Parabh jee ko naam japat man chain — holding the Name of the One, the mind finds chain. Chain means rest and calm.

The next line holds a puzzle. Baho parkaar khojeh sabh — people search in a hundred different ways. Yet searching, as hard work, cannot pin the One down. Think of trying to catch a butterfly by chasing it. It keeps slipping away. Sit still in the garden, and it may land on your hand. The Name brings rest. It is not a chase that ends in a catch.

A Question to Sit With

When your mind is racing, what helps it settle — trying harder, or something else?
