In plain words

The wise are those who wash their own heart clean.

The true Muslim washes away whatever dirties the soul. Whoever reads and understands is welcomed, carrying the mark of the One's court upon them.

The cleaning that matters most is the cleaning of the heart.
The deeper layer

Wise people wash the heart, the place no one else can see.

Daanasband so-ee dil Dhovai: the wise person is the one who washes their own heart. Musalmaan so-ee mal khovai: the true Muslim is the one who washes away what dirties the soul. This is said with respect. Guru Nanak honours the word "Muslim" by giving it its deepest meaning — someone clean inside — rather than a label worn on the outside.

Parhi-aa boojhai so parvaan: the one who reads and truly understands is accepted. Jis sir dargeh kaa neesaan — on their forehead is the mark of the One's court, like a stamp that lets you through the gate. It is understanding, not a certificate or a title, that marks a person as the One's.

A Question to Sit With

What is one thing you could do to keep your own heart clean and kind?
