Nearer Than You Think

ਜਾਨਤ ਦੂਰਿ ਤੁਮਹਿ ਪ੍ਰਭ ਨੇਰਿ ॥

They believe that You are far away, but You, O God, are near at hand.
ਉਤ ਤਾਕੈ ਉਤ ਤੇ ਉਤ ਪੇਖੈ ਆਵੈ ਲੋਭੀ ਫੇਰਿ ॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥

Looking around, this way and that, the greedy people come and go. ||Pause||

jab lag tutai naahee man bharmaa tab lag mukat na ko-ee.
As long as the doubts of the mind are not removed, liberation is not found.

Says Nanak, he alone is a Saint, a devotee, and a humble servant of the Lord, to whom the Lord and Master is merciful. ||2||5||36||

In plain words

People think You are far away, God, and You are right here, close at hand.

A grabbing heart looks this way and that, and keeps coming and going.

As long as the doubt in the mind stays unbroken, no one is free. The one the kind Master shows mercy to is the devoted one, the true servant.

You are not searching for something far away; you are learning to notice what is already near.
The deeper layer

The One we think is far away is right here.

This is the Rahao, the "pause" line at the center of the shabad, and it holds the whole shabad. jaanat door tumeh parabh nayr — people think You are far, but You are near. A greedy heart keeps looking this way and that, coming and going. It is like searching the whole house for glasses that are sitting on your head.

jab lag tutai naahee man bharmaa — as long as the mind's bharam, its restless doubt, is not broken, freedom stays out of reach. What breaks it is da-i-aal su-aamee, the kind Master's mercy. The one who receives that mercy is the true devoted one. Freedom comes from seeing that the One is near, not from crossing a great distance.

A Question to Sit With

What are you looking 'out there' for that might already be right beside you?
