Verse 2 of 3

A Prayer to the Kind One

ਮਹਾ ਕਲੋਲ ਬੁਝਹਿ ਮਾਇਆ ਕੇ ਕਰਿ ਕਿਰਪਾ ਮੇਰੇ ਦੀਨ ਦਇਆਲ ॥
mahaa kalol bujheh maa-i-aa kay kar kirpaa mayray deen da-i-aal.
Please shower Your Mercy upon me, and permit me to ignore the great enticements of Maya, O Lord, Merciful to the meek.
ਅਪਣਾ ਨਾਮੁ ਦੇਹਿ ਜਪਿ ਜੀਵਾ ਪੂਰਨ ਹੋਇ ਦਾਸ ਕੀ ਘਾਲ ॥੧॥
apnaa naam deh jap jeevaa pooran ho-ay daas kee ghaal. ||1||
Give me Your Name - chanting it, I live; please bring the efforts of Your slave to fruition. ||1||

Translation by Dr. Sant Singh Khalsa

In plain words

Kind One, gentle to the small and humble, let the loud waves of Maya — the glitter of things that pull at us — settle down in me.

Give me Your Naam; saying it, I come alive. Let the effort of Your servant finally bear fruit.

Ask honestly for help, and let your effort be met halfway.
The deeper layer

Please calm the noise in me, and give me Your Naam so I can come alive.

The verse speaks straight to the One as deen da-i-aal, the One who is tender to the small and humble. It asks the One to still mahaa kalol maa-i-aa, the big, splashing waves of Maya. Maya is the pull of shiny things that grab at our attention, like a phone buzzing again and again.

Then: jap jeevaa — saying Your Name, I live. Saying the Name is not empty repeating. It is what brings a person to life, the way breathing does.

A Question to Sit With

When something inside you feels too loud, what helps it settle?
