Wrapped Up in Passing Things

ਮਾਤ ਪਿਤਾ ਭਾਈ ਸੁਤ ਬਨਿਤਾ ਤਾ ਕੈ ਰਸਿ ਲਪਟਾਨਾ ॥
maat pitaa bhaa-ee sut banitaa taa kai ras laptaanaa.
Mother, father, siblings, children and spouse - he is entangled in their love.
ਜੋਬਨੁ ਧਨੁ ਪ੍ਰਭਤਾ ਕੈ ਮਦ ਮੈ ਅਹਿਨਿਸਿ ਰਹੈ ਦਿਵਾਨਾ ॥੧॥
joban Dhan parabh-taa kai mad mai ahinis rahai divaanaa. ||1||
In the pride of youth, wealth and glory, day and night, he remains intoxicated. ||1||

In plain words

Mother, father, sisters and brothers, children, the person you love — the heart wraps itself up in the sweetness of each one.

And in the glow of youth, of wealth, of standing tall, it stays dazzled morning and night.

It's easy to get so wrapped up in good things that you forget the source of them.
The deeper layer

We love our families, and that warm love can make it easy to forget the deeper Source.

The verse names the warm ties of a life: maat pitaa bhaa-ee sut banitaa — mother, father, brothers, children, and spouse. It does not find fault with loving family. It simply notices how easily the heart forgets the deeper source of all that love.

Mad mai ahinis rahai divaanaa — day and night, a person stays dazzled by youth, wealth, and standing. It is like being so busy with the presents that you forget who gave them. The tone is gentle noticing, not blame.

A Question to Sit With

What good thing in your life could you love without forgetting where it came from?
