Sikhism·Raag Dhanaasaree·Shabad 91
Verse 2 of 3

Gold and Iron the Same

ਪਰ ਨਿੰਦਾ ਉਸਤਤਿ ਨਹ ਜਾ ਕੈ ਕੰਚਨ ਲੋਹ ਸਮਾਨੋ ॥
par nindaa ustat nah jaa kai kanchan loh samaano.
One who does not slander or praise others, who looks upon gold and iron alike,
ਹਰਖ ਸੋਗ ਤੇ ਰਹੈ ਅਤੀਤਾ ਜੋਗੀ ਤਾਹਿ ਬਖਾਨੋ ॥੧॥
harakh sog tay rahai ateetaa jogee taahi bakhaano. ||1||
who is free from pleasure and pain - he alone is called a true Yogi. ||1||

Translation by Dr. Sant Singh Khalsa

In plain words

Someone does not tear others down, and is not swept away by praise. They look at gold and plain iron and treat them the same.

They stay steady through both joy and sorrow. That one is a true seeker.

A steady heart treats gold and iron, praise and blame, the same.
The deeper layer

A true seeker stays steady, whether life brings praise or blame, gold or iron, joy or sorrow.

The verse describes the real seeker by one thing: evenness.

Nindaa ustat nah — not moved by blame or by praise. Kanchan loh samaano — gold and iron look the same to them. Harakh sog tay rahai ateetaa — they stay free of the swings between pleasure and pain.

Think of a boat with a good heavy keel. Big waves come from both sides, but the boat stays upright. That steady, natural balance is called sahaj, an easy calm that comes from inside.

A Question to Sit With

What helps you stay steady whether people are praising you or criticizing you?
