Coming Empty-Handed

Obtaining this human incarnation, I have done no good deeds; this makes me very afraid!
man bach karam har gun nahee gaa-ay yeh jee-a soch Dhara-o. ||1||
In thought, word and deed, I have not sung the Lord's Praises; this thought worries my mind. ||1||

Translation by Dr. Sant Singh Khalsa

In plain words

I've been given this rare, precious human life, and I feel I've done so little good with it — and that stirs me deeply.

In thought, word, and deed I've hardly sung what is good in You, and that thought sits quietly on my heart.

Coming with honest, empty hands opens the door to grace.
The deeper layer

This is an honest look inward: I have been given so much, and I have done so little good with it.

Kachh bhalo na keeno — I have done so little good. Man bach karam — in thought, in word, and in deed, I have hardly sung the One's praise.

It is like getting a whole summer off and realizing at the end that you never did the project you meant to start. The feeling is not "I am bad." It is feeling empty-handed.

This is caring about how you live, without being harsh on yourself. And it opens a door toward grace, which the next verse walks through.

A Question to Sit With

When you feel you could have done better, how do you turn that feeling into something gentle?
