In plain words

There is only One. And the One is found by the True Guru's grace — a gift that is always here, waiting for an open heart.

The one who guides me is like a wide ocean, filled all the way through with jewels.

Those who love wisdom gather here and feed on what is sweet and life-giving, and they never wander far from it.

They taste the deep sweetness of the One, and they are cherished.

Like swans that live on a clear pool, they find, right here, the very Life of their lives.

Stay close to the water that feeds you.
The deeper layer

The Guru is like an ocean full of jewels, and true seekers are like swans who never want to leave it.

Gur saagar ratnee bharpooray — the Guru is an ocean, filled all the way with jewels.

The seekers are pictured as hans, swans. An old story says swans eat only pearls. So they stay close to the water where the pearls are. They feed on amrit, nectar, the sweet food that gives life, and they never wander far.

Think of a library you love so much that you never want to leave. Everything you need is there. This picture of swans and a clear pool runs through the whole hymn.

A Question to Sit With

Where do you go to feel nourished, and do you stay near it?
