Bathing Outside, Stained Within

In spite of the many places of pilgrimage for people to bathe in, their minds are still stained by their stubborn ego; the Lord Master is not pleased by this at all.
kad paava-o saaDhsang har har sadaa aanand gi-aan anjan mayraa man isnaanai. ||4||
When will I find the Saadh Sangat, the Company of the Holy? There, I shall be always in the ecstasy of the Lord, Har, Har, and my mind shall take its cleansing bath in the healing ointment of spiritual wisdom. ||4||

In plain words

I have bathed at every holy river, yet a stubborn pride keeps staining me, and that does not move the One inside me at all.

When will I find the Sangat, and live in the steady joy of the One?

There my mind would finally take its true bath, washed clean by the soothing ointment of wisdom.

The bath that matters happens inside.
The deeper layer

The bath that cleans the mind happens in the Sangat.

Jaytay ray tirath naa-ay — I have bathed at so many tirath, holy river places. Yet the mail, the stain of stubborn ego, is still there. Washing the outside cannot reach what is inside. It is like washing a car to fix the engine.

The cleansing bath is gi-aan anjan, the soothing ointment of wisdom. Gi-aan means wisdom. It is found in saaDhsang, the Sangat — people gathered together to remember the One. There the mind finally takes its true bath.

A Question to Sit With

What helps you feel clear again after a hard day?
