Raag Gauree
Commentary

Raag Gauree Gwaarayree, Mehl 1 (Guru Nanak)

Reverent awe is the heaviest, most real thing a person can carry; cleverness weighs almost nothing beside it, and words without awe are only wind.

The Arc

The opening shabad of the whole Gauree raag weighs bhau (reverent awe) against the intellect and finds the intellect weightless. Pauri 0 sets the scale: awe is heavy and real, the mind and its speech are light. The Rahao (Pauri 1) reveals the key turn — awe is not the enemy of love but its ornament, and without it no one crosses the world-ocean. Pauri 2 shows awe burning away the smaller fears and exposing as counterfeit any life built without it. Pauri 3 closes on the manmukh whose clever talk, never warmed by real awe, blows past like wind.

Key Vocabulary

  • bhau: reverent awe — not terror but the trembling wonder before the vast and holy; the keynote of Gauree Mehl 1
  • bhaaraa / haulee: heavy / light — awe is weighty and real; intellect and speech are weightless
  • bhavjal: the terrifying world-ocean that awe alone lets the soul cross
  • manmukh: the self-facing person whose words, lacking awe, are mere wind

Themes and Cross-Connections

This shabad is the cornerstone of the Bhau teaching in philosophy.md: reverent awe is the one healthy fear that drives out every unhealthy one, and it is inseparable from love — a love with no awe goes slack, an awe with no love curdles into dread. Guru Nanak also draws his recurring line between weighty reality (sach) and weightless show: cleverness and performance produce nothing that will pass as real, the same point he makes against ritual and scholarship elsewhere.

For Raag Gauree

Gauree is the raag of sober, reflective contemplation, and Nanak opens it exactly there — not with ecstasy but with the grounding weight of awe. The mood is steady and serious, asking the listener to set down the lightness of cleverness and take up something that can actually be carried across the deep.
