Raag Gauree
Commentary

Raag Gauree, Ashtapadi (Du-Tukas), Mehl 5 (Guru Arjan)

In good company, real listening can clear countless obstacles in a moment; the Name is the one food that quiets the restless inner hunger.

The Arc

Pauri 0: countless obstacles melt in an instant for those who gather and listen. The Rahao (Pauri 1) names the fruit — drinking the nectar of the Name erases khudh, the restless inner hunger. Pauri 2: a whole treasure of peace and ease lives in the heart full of the One. Pauri 3: charms, mantras, and clever tricks are "ashes" beside keeping the Maker in the heart. Pauri 4 closes — release all doubt and turn to the One; this path is atal, unshakeable.

Key Vocabulary

  • kot bighan hiray khin maahi: millions of obstacles removed in an instant
  • sunaahi: listening — deep reception in good company
  • khudh: the never-satisfied inner hunger, quieted by the Name
  • aukhadh mantar tant... chhaar: medicines, spells, magic — "all ashes"
  • atal dharam: the eternal, unwavering path

Themes and Cross-Connections

The instantaneous clearing of obstacles (khin maahi) is a recurring Guru Arjan comfort — transformation need not be slow. The atal (unshakeable) path connects to Sach: the most real thing is the one that holds when everything else washes off.

Translation Notes

Pauri 3's wording calls aukhadh mantar tant — medicines, mantras, spells — "ashes" beside keeping the Maker in the heart, and states no narrower target than that. We read it evenhandedly as aimed at reliance on formula and spell to force outcomes — a tendency in every tradition — rather than at any particular practice or people; that reading is ours, not a distinction the verse spells out. The positive teaching is trust in the living One over trust in technique.

For Raag Gauree

Gauree's sober key suits the shabad's steadying claim that the real path is atal — unmoved by the churn of the world.
