Raag Gauree
Commentary

Raag Gauree, Fifth Mehl (Guru Arjan)

The bow, the gaze, and the love behind them are all blessed — and it is love that gives the gestures their meaning; lasting peace is not manufactured by getting what we want but flows from remembrance — and the most admirable life is one given, heart and all, to the One beyond every trouble.

The Arc

This compact three-part shabad opens (Pauri 0, ||1||) by blessing the forehead, the eyes, and the hearts truly in love with the One — read here as an invitation to reverence joined with genuine love. The Rahao (Pauri 1) asks where lasting peace lives and answers: in remembrance, spoken warmly on the tongue. Pauri 2 closes in humble reverence for those who keep in mind the nirbaan One, the presence beyond all disturbance.

Key Vocabulary

  • mastak / nayt: forehead / eyes — outward gestures of reverence, blessed alongside love
  • hayt: love — blessed together with the gestures, and what gives them meaning
  • sukh: true, settled peace — flowing from remembrance, not from getting one's way
  • rasnaa ... jas: the tongue speaking the praises of the One — gentle, warm practice
  • nirbaan: the One beyond all disturbance — beyond craving, fear, and unrest

Themes and Cross-Connections

The commentary's reading — honoring outward reverence and locating its meaning in the love behind it — reflects the project's steady preference for inner substance over form, evenhanded toward all outward devotion. Sukh flowing from remembrance rather than acquisition connects to Sahaj and the batch-wide insight that peace is received inwardly, not chased outwardly (Gurprasad). Honoring others who love the One models the humility (empty-handedness) that closes several shabads in this raag.

For Raag Gauree

Gauree's reflective gentleness suits a short, warm shabad about love behind gesture and peace within remembrance. The mood is admiring and humble, closing on quiet reverence for anyone who has given their heart to the One beyond all trouble.
