Commentary

Raag Gauree Gwaarayree, Ashtapadee, Mehl 1 (Guru Nanak)

Until the grasping self softens, the soul's real work stalls; every goodness belongs to the One beyond all labels, and the mind that turns from itself toward the teaching finds its rest in song.

The Arc

The opening verse (Pauri 0) states the problem and cure: while the grasping self runs the show the work stalls, but the mind that softens through the teaching becomes whole. The rahao (Pauri 1) is the hinge — the One is beyond all labels yet the source of every goodness, and setting self-importance aside is what lets us truly see. Pauris 2-3 trace the straying mind: it dreams up trouble and carries the weight, then wanders into Maya — met by the tender remedy of savoring the Name. Pauri 4's worldly treasures can't reach home; Pauri 5's wealth breeds worry while natural peace comes to the heart that holds the One. Pauri 6 is grace gathering virtues and burning faults; Pauri 7 contrasts the self-facing and teaching-facing mind; Pauri 8 lets the restless mind find rest, at last, in song.

Key Vocabulary

  • naa man marai: until the grasping self softens — the stalled work
  • doot / durmat / doay: the inner pulls — muddled thinking and the sense of separateness, not literal monsters
  • maanai: the mind aligned, given in (root of mannai) — inner alignment, not mere belief
  • nirgun raam / gunah vas: the One beyond qualities / the source all virtues answer to
  • aap nivaar: setting self-importance aside — what makes real reflection possible
  • rasan rasaaay: let the tongue savor the Name — remembrance as delight
  • sahaj: natural ease — the steady peace beneath the seesaw of harakh/sok
  • manmukh / gurmukh: the self-facing mind / the teaching-facing one

Themes and Cross-Connections

This Ashtapadee turns on a single axis — self-facing versus teaching-facing (manmukh / gurmukh) — and every verse is a variation on it. The nirgun / sagun tension in the rahao (the One beyond qualities yet the source of all virtue) is pure Gurbani theology, handled so a child meets it as "beyond all labels, yet every goodness belongs to it." The "demons" (doot) are rendered as inner pulls per the wellbeing rules — muddle and separateness, not monsters — and naa man marai as the self softening, not violence against the self (ego-as-illness, philosophy.md, Haumai). Dhur karam (Pauri 7) is softened from fatalistic "pre-ordained destiny" to a deep seed opening, honoring grace-given readiness without fear. Remembrance is framed as delight (rasan rasaaay), never grim duty.

For Raag Gauree

Gauree Gwaarayree's reflective interiority suits a hymn that lives entirely in the drama of the mind's orientation. The mood is patient and diagnostic, tracing how confusion makes its own weight — and then, without strain, letting the running mind come to rest in song.
