Raag Gauree
Commentary

Raag Gauree, Bhagat Kabir

The body is a treasure-house with a priceless jewel hidden inside; the breath guards it. Wake up, gather your scattered attention, and turn inward to the tenth gate — where you meet the One who was there all along.

The Arc

Pauri 0 paints the body as a marvelous house with six chambers and a hidden, priceless treasure, guarded by the breath. The rahao (Pauri 1) is the song's beating heart: wake up — don't drift past the treasure asleep. Pauri 2 shows how: keep awareness awake behind the easily-distracted senses, and an inner light dawns. Pauri 3 lands it — stop leaking attention outward through the nine gates; rise to the tenth gate within and meet the essence.

Key Vocabulary

  • basat anoop: the "incomparable thing" — the divine treasure hidden inside the body
  • man jaagat rahu: "keep the mind awake" — the song's central call
  • panch pahrooaa: the five senses standing guard, easily distracted
  • dasvaan duaar: the "Tenth Gate" — the inward doorway of deep awareness (beyond the body's nine openings)
  • tat: the true essence, the One

Themes and Cross-Connections

Rich ulat-baasee (riddle-wonder preserved): the body as treasure-house, the senses as guards, the tenth gate as inner door. Ties to Suniai (philosophy.md) — gathered, awake attention that lets the inner light through — and to the recurring Gurbani teaching that the divine is within, not out searching to be found (echoes the musk-deer). Wonderfully empowering for children: the treasure is built into you.

For Raag Gauree

Gauree's inward register suits a song that turns the seeker's gaze from the outer world to the inner gate.

Translation Notes

  • WELLBEING: "you have wasted your life / thieves plunder your home" softened into a gentle wake-up from a friend ("Sibling of Destiny" kept warm), an invitation rather than a threat or a shaming.
  • The "nine gates / womb / body" imagery kept wholesome and non-frightening; no bodily horror.
  • dasvaan duaar explained as an inner doorway of awareness, not anything to fear or force.
