Gauree, Fifth Mehl:
ਆਪਨ ਤਨੁ ਨਹੀ ਜਾ ਕੋ ਗਰਬਾ ॥
aapan tan nahee jaa ko garbaa.
The body which you are so proud of, does not belong to you.
ਰਾਜ ਮਿਲਖ ਨਹੀ ਆਪਨ ਦਰਬਾ ॥੧॥
raaj milakh nahee aapan darbaa. ||1||
Power, property and wealth are not yours. ||1||

Translation by Dr. Sant Singh Khalsa

In plain words

The body you're so proud of doesn't actually belong to you. Power, property, wealth — none of that is truly yours either.

The body and the things you're proud of are really only borrowed — and that's a relief, not a loss.
The deeper layer

Your body and your things are on loan to you, and knowing that is a relief.

Aapan tan nahee jaa ko garbaa — the body you are proud of is not yours. Garbaa means pride. Raaj milakh nahee aapan darbaa — power, land and money are not yours either.

This is not a gloomy thought. It is a freeing one. Think of a library book. You enjoy it and take good care of it. But you do not lie awake guarding it forever, because it was never yours to keep.

Pride ties us tightly to things we only borrow. Seeing them as borrowed loosens that worried grip. You do not have to carry the weight of guarding what was never yours.

A Question to Sit With

What would feel lighter if you held your favorite things as borrowed rather than owned?
