Holding the One Carries You Across the Fire

ਗੁਰ ਕੇ ਚਰਣ ਰਿਦੈ ਉਰਿ ਧਾਰਿ ॥
gur kay charan ridai ur Dhaar.
Enshrine the Guru's Feet in your heart.
ਅਗਨਿ ਸਾਗਰੁ ਜਪਿ ਉਤਰਹਿ ਪਾਰਿ ॥੨॥
agan saagar jap utreh paar. ||2||
Meditate on Him and cross over the ocean of fire. ||2||

Translation by Dr. Sant Singh Khalsa

In plain words

Hold the guide's presence close in your heart. Keeping the One in mind, you cross straight over the ocean of fire — the burning trouble that seems too wide to pass.

Holding the One in mind carries you across the burning trouble that looks too wide to cross.
The deeper layer

Hold the Guru close in your heart, and you are carried across the fire.

Gur kay charan ridai ur Dhaar — keep the Guru's feet, the Guru's guidance, close in your heart. Agan saagar jap utreh paar — remembering, you cross the ocean of fire.

The ocean of fire is a picture Gurbani, the Guru's Word, uses often. It means a life of burning wants and worry. Remembering the One does not dry up that ocean. It carries you across it, dry and safe. It is like a bridge over a busy road: the traffic keeps rushing, but you cross above it.

A Question to Sit With

What trouble in your life feels too wide to cross — and who could help you across it?
