Verse 6 of 9

Only the Name Is the True Nectar

taajee turkee su-inaa rupaa kaparh kayray bhaaraa.
- none of these shall go with you, O Nanak. They are lost and left behind, you fool!
koojaa mayvaa mai sabh kichh chaakhi-aa ik amrit naam tumaaraa. ||4||
I have tasted all the sugar candy and sweets, but Your Name alone is Ambrosial Nectar. ||4||

In plain words

Fine horses, gold, silver, piles of beautiful clothes -- none of it goes with you. It is all left behind, you foolish heart. I have tasted every sweet there is, but only your Name is the true nectar.

Every worldly sweet is left behind at the end -- only the Name is the true nectar.
The deeper layer

All the fancy things we own stay behind, and only the Name is true sweetness.

Here the turn begins. Taajee turkee su-inaa rupaa kaparh kayray bhaaraa — fine Turkish horses, gold, silver, and piles of lovely clothes. In Guru Nanak's time, prized warhorses were a sign of great wealth. Kis hee naal na chalay — none of it goes with anyone. It is all left behind.

Koojaa mayvaa mai sabh kichh chaakhi-aa — I have tasted every candy and sweet. Ik amrit naam tumaaraa — Your Name alone is amrit, true nectar. This is Har Ras, the taste of the One.

Think of a whole box of sweets, next to a hug from someone who loves you. The false sweets and the one true sweetness are the hinge. Here the shabad swings from sad crying to the cure.

A Question to Sit With

What is the sweetest thing you have ever tasted? What might a "sweetness that lasts" be?
