hog tisai kaa bhaanaa. ||1|| rahaa-o.

Translation by Dr. Sant Singh Khalsa

In plain words

Listen, my foolish mind, you who do not understand.

Only the One's will wins out in the end.

After all the striving, only the One's will carries the day.
The deeper layer

This short pause line sums up the whole shabad: in the end, only the One's will carries through.

This is the third Rahao, or "pause" line, in the shabad. Sun moorakh man ajaanaa — listen, foolish mind that does not understand. Hog tisai kaa bhaanaa — only the One's bhaanaa, the One's will, will come to pass. After all the striving and saving up, Hukam, the flow of existence, is what carries through.

Notice how often this shabad says "listen." Each pause line calls us to deep listening, and that is the real ask. Think of a coach at halftime. The players have been running hard, and now the coach says, "Stop. Listen." Real listening is where the change begins.

A Question to Sit With

What is something you cannot control, no matter how hard you try?
