Effort Aimed the Wrong Way Arrives Nowhere

ਬੈਲ ਕਉ ਨੇਤ੍ਰਾ ਪਾਇ ਦੁਹਾਵੈ ॥
bail ka-o naytaraa paa-ay duhaavai.
It would be like tying up an ox and trying to milk it,
ਗਊ ਚਰਿ ਸਿੰਘ ਪਾਛੈ ਪਾਵੈ ॥੨॥
ga-oo char singh paachhai paavai. ||2||
or riding a cow to chase a tiger. ||2||

Translation by Dr. Sant Singh Khalsa

In plain words

You can tie up an ox and try to milk it, but no milk will come. That's not what it's for.

You can climb on a cow and chase after a tiger, but it will never work.

Effort aimed in the wrong direction — however earnest — arrives nowhere.
The deeper layer

Hard work pointed the wrong way arrives nowhere.

Here are two more pictures. Bail ka-o naytaraa paa-ay duhaavai — tying up an ox and trying to milk it. Ga-oo char singh paachhai paavai — riding a cow to chase a tiger. Both people are trying hard. Both will fail, because the tool does not fit the job.

The point is not that effort is useless. It is that effort cut off from the real Source produces nothing. It is like trying to cut paper with a spoon. You can push all day. A life turned away from the One can be very busy and still get nowhere.

A Question to Sit With

Can you think of a time you worked really hard at something, but in a way that couldn't have worked?
