Remembering Is Written Into You From the Beginning

ਸਿਮਰਿ ਗੋਵਿੰਦੁ ਮਨਿ ਤਨਿ ਧੁਰਿ ਲਿਖਿਆ ॥
simar govind man tan Dhur likhi-aa.
Meditate in remembrance on the Lord of the Universe in your mind and body - this is your pre-ordained destiny.
ਕਾਹੂ ਕਾਜ ਨ ਆਵਤ ਬਿਖਿਆ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥
kaahoo kaaj na aavat bikhi-aa. ||1|| rahaa-o.
The poison of Maya is of no use at all. ||1||Pause||

Translation by Dr. Sant Singh Khalsa

In plain words

Let me remember the One with my whole mind and body — this is written into me from the very beginning, the deepest thing I'm made for.

The tempting things that promise so much and deliver so little are of no real use in the end.

Remembering the One is written into you from the beginning; the glittering chase delivers far less than it promises.
The deeper layer

This is the Rahao, the heart of the shabad. Simar govind... dhur likhi-aa — remembering the One is dhur likhi-aa, "written from the origin" — the literal renders this as preordained destiny, which can be felt as our deepest nature, what we are made for. Bikhi-aa — often "the poison of Maya" — is here the glittering stuff that promises fulfillment and can't provide it. The pauri sets our truest calling (remembrance) against the emptiest chase (grasping at what can't satisfy), and gently points home.

A Question to Sit With

What is something you feel you were, in some deep way, made for?
