Verse 6 of 6

The Truth Defends the Truthful

ਨਾਨਕ ਸਰਨਿ ਪਰੇ ਦਰਬਾਰਿ ॥
naanak saran paray darbaar.
Nanak has taken to the Sanctuary of the Lord's Court;
ਰਾਖੀ ਪੈਜ ਮੇਰੈ ਕਰਤਾਰਿ ॥੫॥੯੯॥੧੬੮॥
raakhee paij mayrai kartaar. ||5||99||168||
my Creator has preserved my honor. ||5||99||168||

Translation by Dr. Sant Singh Khalsa

In plain words

I have simply come and stood at the door of the One, asking for shelter with an open, empty heart.

And the One has kept my honor safe — held my dignity, and did not let me be shamed.

Come to the door with open hands, and your honor is kept safe — the truth defends the truthful.
The deeper layer

The shabad ends in quiet relief: the One has kept the truthful person's honor safe.

Naanak saran paray darbaar — Nanak has come for shelter at the One's court. Notice how he comes. He does not demand to be proven right. He simply comes to the door with empty hands.

Then the answer: raakhee paij mayrai kartaar — my Creator kept my honor safe. Paij means your good name, your dignity. It is exactly what a false charge tries to steal. After a whole shabad about lies coming apart, it ends with the sheltered person's honor still whole. Like a lamp in a storm that the wind never puts out, the truth defended the truthful.

A Question to Sit With

When your honesty is questioned unfairly, where do you find the calm to simply keep standing in the truth?
