Translation by Dr. Sant Singh Khalsa
Who is really our mother, who our father? Where did we actually come from? We were formed out of the heat of the womb and a tiny bubble of water. Why were we made at all?
Guru Nanak asks the biggest questions of all: where did we come from, and what are we here for?
Kat kee maa-ee baap kat kayraa — who is our mother, and whose is our father? Kidoo thaavhu ham aa-ay — where did we come from? He asks about our parents, our beginning and our purpose, plainly and without fuss.
He does not answer with family names or proud family trees. He answers with two simple pictures: the warmth of the womb, and a tiny bubble of water. Think of how small every one of us began. Nobody starts out important. That quietly lets the air out of pride in birth and family line.
Then comes the real question. Kaahay kamm upaa-ay — for what work were we made? Life is a gift, and its purpose is what matters.
Why do you think you are here? What would you want your purpose to be?
