The Real Accounting Happens Inside Your Heart

ਤਟ ਤੀਰਥ ਹਮ ਨਵ ਖੰਡ ਦੇਖੇ ਹਟ ਪਟਣ ਬਾਜਾਰਾ ॥
tat tirath ham nav khand daykhay hat patan baajaaraa.
I saw the banks of sacred rivers, the nine continents, the shops and bazaars of the cities.
ਲੈ ਕੈ ਤਕੜੀ ਤੋਲਣਿ ਲਾਗਾ ਘਟ ਹੀ ਮਹਿ ਵਣਜਾਰਾ ॥੪॥
lai kai takrhee tolan laagaa ghat hee meh vanjaaraa. ||4||
Taking the scale, the merchant begins to weigh his actions within his own heart. ||4||

In plain words

I have visited the holy riverbanks, the nine lands, all the markets of the world. And now, like a trader with a scale, I begin to weigh my own actions inside my heart.

After all the wandering, the real accounting happens inside your own heart.
The deeper layer

After all the travelling, the real weighing-up happens inside your own heart.

Tat tirath ham nav khand daykhay hat patan baajaaraa — I have seen the holy riverbanks, the nine continents, and the shops and bazaars of the cities. The soul has wandered everywhere.

Then it turns inward. Lai kai takrhee tolan laagaa ghat hee meh vanjaaraa — taking up the scale, the trader begins to weigh within the heart. A takrhee is a merchant's balance scale. Now the soul is the trader, weighing its own actions. Think of coming home from a big trip and emptying your backpack onto the bed to see what you really brought back. Travel outside gives way to an honest counting-up inside.

A Question to Sit With

If you weighed your actions honestly today, what would the scale show?
