The One Thing Worth Knowing Is the Name

ਨਾਮੁ ਨ ਜਾਨਿਆ ਰਾਮ ਕਾ ॥
naam na jaani-aa raam kaa.
You do not know the Name of the Lord.
ਮੂੜੇ ਫਿਰਿ ਪਾਛੈ ਪਛੁਤਾਹਿ ਰੇ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥
moorhay fir paachhai pachhutaahi ray. ||1|| rahaa-o.
You fool - you shall regret and repent in the end! ||1||Pause||

Translation by Dr. Sant Singh Khalsa

In plain words

You do not yet know the One's Name. And foolish heart -- in the end you will wish you had.

The one thing worth knowing is the Name -- and forgetting it is what we come to regret.
The deeper layer

The Rahao. The single missing thing is the Name. The warning of future regret recurs across these Chaytee and Bairaagan shabads: regret is the inevitable fruit of a life that never learned the Name.

A Question to Sit With

What is something important you keep meaning to learn but have not yet?
