When the seed of the karma of past actions sprouted, I met the Lord; He is both the Enjoyer and the Renunciate.

My darkness was dispelled when I met the Lord. O Nanak, after being asleep for countless incarnations, I have awakened. ||2||2||119||

In plain words

When the good seeds planted long ago by kind actions finally sprouted, I met the One. The One is fully alive to joy and fully free inside.

The darkness lifted the moment we met. I had felt asleep for the longest time. Now something in me has woken up at last.

When what was long planted finally sprouts, meeting the One is like waking up after a long sleep.
The deeper layer

This one says that when the time is ripe, meeting the One feels like waking up.

Poorab karam ankur jab pargatay — when the sprouts of karam, past actions, broke through the ground. Think of a seed planted long ago. For a long time nothing shows. Then one morning, a green shoot. The verse puts that sprouting just before the meeting.

Bhayti-o purakh rasik bairaagee — I met the One who is both rasik and bairaagee. Rasik means fully alive to joy. Bairaagee means free, holding on to nothing. In the One, joy and freedom sit together.

Miti-o andhayr milat har — the darkness lifted when I met the One. Janam janam kee so-ee jaagee — asleep for lifetimes, now awake. It feels like a fresh morning after a very long night.

A Question to Sit With

Have you ever suddenly understood something and felt like you'd just woken up?
