Verse 3 of 6

The Senses Can't Reach the One Thing That Satisfies

ਏਕਾ ਸੰਗਤਿ ਇਕਤੁ ਗ੍ਰਿਹਿ ਬਸਤੇ ਮਿਲਿ ਬਾਤ ਨ ਕਰਤੇ ਭਾਈ ॥
aykaa sangat ikat garihi bastay mil baat na kartay bhaa-ee.
The one lives together with the other in the same house, but they do not talk to one another, O Siblings of Destiny.
ਏਕ ਬਸਤੁ ਬਿਨੁ ਪੰਚ ਦੁਹੇਲੇ ਓਹ ਬਸਤੁ ਅਗੋਚਰ ਠਾਈ ॥੨॥
ayk basat bin panch duhaylay oh basat agochar thaa-ee. ||2||
Without the one substance, the five are miserable; that substance is in the unapproachable place. ||2||

In plain words

Two things live together in the very same house and never speak to each other — the soul and the One, sharing one home, yet unmet.

Without that one precious thing, the five senses wander unsatisfied. And that one thing rests in a quiet place the senses alone can never reach.

The senses can never quite reach the one thing that would truly satisfy them.
The deeper layer

The five senses can never reach the one thing that would truly satisfy them.

This verse is a riddle. Aykaa sangat ikat garihi bastay — two live together in one house. The house is the body. The two are the soul and the One within. Mil baat na kartay — yet they never talk.

Ayk basat bin panch duhaylay — without that one precious thing, the five are unhappy. The one thing is the presence of the One. The five are the senses: seeing, hearing, smelling, tasting and touching. Without it they stay restless and never full. Think of scrolling a phone for something good to watch. Another video, then another, and you still feel empty.

Oh basat agochar thaa-ee — that treasure sits in a place the senses cannot reach. It is found by turning inward and growing still, not by grabbing outward. The senses cannot fetch what only inner stillness shows.

A Question to Sit With

Have you noticed that no amount of one more thing to see, taste, or buy ever leaves you fully satisfied?
