Verse 4 of 5

The Deepest Home Is Within Your Own Being

ਜਾ ਕਉ ਆਏ ਸੋਈ ਵਿਹਾਝਹੁ ਹਰਿ ਗੁਰ ਤੇ ਮਨਹਿ ਬਸੇਰਾ ॥
jaa ka-o aa-ay so-ee vihaajhahu har gur tay maneh basayraa.
Purchase only that for which you have come into the world, and through the Guru, the Lord shall dwell within your mind.
nij ghar mahal paavhu sukh sehjay bahur na ho-igo fayraa. ||3||
Within the home of your own inner being, you shall obtain the Mansion of the Lord's Presence with intuitive ease. You shall not be consigned again to the wheel of reincarnation. ||3||

In plain words

Trade for the very thing you came into this life to find — that is the purchase worth making. Through the Teacher, the One comes to live in your mind.

Then you find the home of peace within your own true self, gently and with ease, and you feel at last completely at home.

The deepest home you're looking for isn't somewhere far away — it's within your own being.
The deeper layer

Spend your life on the one thing you came here for, and you will find your true home inside yourself.

Jaa ka-o aa-ay so-ee vihaajhahu — buy the very thing you came for. That is the reason for being born human. Har gur tay maneh basayraa — through the Guru, the One comes to live in your mind.

Nij ghar mahal paavhu — you find the palace inside your own home. Nij ghar means your own home, the home of your inner being. Many teachers today call it your own true self. You find it sukh sehjay, in peace and with natural ease.

Think of searching the whole house for your glasses, and finding them on your own head.

The verse also says there will be no more going round the circle of birth and death. It is the feeling of finally arriving home, and belonging there for good.

A Question to Sit With

Where or with whom do you feel most completely 'at home' — fully yourself, at ease?
