Sikhism·Raag Gauree·Shabad 190
Verse 3 of 6

The One Lives as Fully in the Fool as the Wise

ਏਕ ਮਹਲਿ ਤੂੰ ਪੰਡਿਤੁ ਬਕਤਾ ਏਕ ਮਹਲਿ ਖਲੁ ਹੋਤਾ ॥
ayk mahal tooN pandit baktaa ayk mahal khal hotaa.
In one person, you are a Pandit, a religious scholar and a preacher, and in another, You are just a fool.
ayk mahal tooN sabh kichh garaahaj ayk mahal kachhoo na laytaa. ||2||
In one person, You grab hold of everything, and in another, You accept nothing. ||2||

Translation by Dr. Sant Singh Khalsa

In plain words

In one person You appear as the learned teacher who speaks with wisdom; in another, as someone who seems foolish and unsure.

In one You reach out and gather everything in; in another, You take nothing at all.

The One lives just as fully in the person the world calls foolish as in the one it calls wise.
The deeper layer

The vision continues across roles: pandit baktaa (the learned preacher) and khal (the one who seems foolish) are equally the One. Note the gentleness: the 'fool' is not condemned — the point is that even in the one the world dismisses, the same reality lives. Sabh kichh garaahaj (grabbing everything) and kachhoo na laytaa (taking nothing) — the greedy and the content — are again one presence. Guru Arjan is dismantling every judgment we make that some people are closer to the divine and others further.

A Question to Sit With

Have you ever quietly judged someone as 'less' — and what might change if you looked again?
