Our Craving Outlasts the Things It Chases

ਕਰਤ ਕਰਤ ਇਵ ਹੀ ਬਿਰਧਾਨੋ ਹਾਰਿਓ ਉਕਤੇ ਤਨੁ ਖੀਨਸੂਆ ॥
karat karat iv hee birDhaano haari-o uktay tan kheensoo-aa.
Doing your deeds, you have grown old; your voice fails you, and your body has become weak.
ji-o mohi-o un mohnee baalaa us tay ghatai naahee ruch chasoo-aa. ||3||
You were enticed by Maya in your youth, and your attachment for it has not diminished, one little bit. ||3||

In plain words

Bit by bit the years go by. One day you notice you've grown older, and some of your old strength has quietly slipped away.

Yet the charming pull that caught you when you were young is just as strong. It hasn't faded even a little.

Our craving for passing pleasures can quietly outlast the very things it's chasing.
The deeper layer

This one says our craving can outlast the very things it chases.

Karat karat iv hee birdhaano — doing and doing, you simply grow old. Haari-o uktay tan kheensoo-aa — the voice grows tired, and the body's strength slips away. This is an honest look at growing older. It is not meant as something to dread.

The real point is a contrast. Ji-o mohi-o un mohnee baalaa — think of the way mohnee, the charming pull of Maya, the world's glitter, held you when you were young. Us tay ghatai naahee ruch chasoo-aa — the craving for it has not shrunk one bit.

Think of a grown-up who still can't walk past a toy store without wanting the newest gadget. The years have passed, but the wanting stayed the same. It is a gentle mirror. Our hunger for what fades can outlast the things it chases.

A Question to Sit With

Is there something you wanted a lot when you were younger that you've since realized didn't matter as much?
