This Human Life Is a Precious Chance

ਅਨਿਕ ਜਨਮ ਬਹੁ ਜੋਨੀ ਭ੍ਰਮਿਆ ਬਹੁਰਿ ਬਹੁਰਿ ਦੁਖੁ ਪਾਇਆ ॥
anik janam baho jonee bharmi-aa bahur bahur dukh paa-i-aa.
Wandering around through countless incarnations, I endured pain and suffering in so many lives, over and over again.
tumree kirpaa tay maanukh dayh paa-ee hai dayh daras har raa-i-aa. ||1||
By Your Grace, I obtained this human body; grant me the Blessed Vision of Your Darshan, O Sovereign Lord King. ||1||

In plain words

I wandered a long, long while through many lives, meeting sorrow again and again.

But by Your kindness I've been given this precious human life — so now, please, let me truly see You, my Sovereign, my King.

This human life is a precious chance — the right response is gratitude and a wish to use it well.
The deeper layer

This human life is a precious chance, and the right answer to it is thankfulness.

Anik janam baho jonee bharmi-aa — wandering through countless lives and forms. Bahur bahur dukh paa-i-aa — meeting dukh, pain, again and again. But the verse does not stay with the pain. It turns quickly to thanks and hope.

Tumree kirpaa tay maanukh dayh paa-ee hai — by Your grace I have received this human body. It is treated as a precious opportunity. So comes the request: dayh daras, let me see You. Daras means seeing, meeting face to face. The long wandering fades into the background. Up front is the gift of right now. It is like finally getting your turn at bat. You want to make it count, and truly meet the One.

A Question to Sit With

What is something about being alive right now that you feel genuinely grateful for?
