In plain words

I came to the Teacher to learn the real way of union — how a person truly connects with the One.

And the Teacher made it clear to me, through the Word — the living teaching that opens the mind.

Real connection with the One isn't about outer costumes or techniques — it's an inner thing the heart learns.
The deeper layer

This one says real connection with the One is not a costume. It is something inside you.

This is the Rahao line. Rahao means "pause." It is the center of the shabad, the line to stop on. Here it sets up the whole song as a lesson on jog. Jog is the word yoga, and it means union, connecting with the One.

Jog jugat sun aa-i-o gur tay — "I came to hear the way of union from the Guru." Jugat means the method, the how-to.

Satgur sabad bujhaa-i-o — "the True Guru made it clear through the Shabad." The Shabad is the Word, the living teaching.

What comes next is Guru Arjan's bright new reading of the yogis' outer signs. Ear-rings, ashes, a horn, a staff: one by one, each becomes something inside. Think of a sports jersey. Wearing it does not make you a player. Real yoga is not costume and technique. It is the heart joined with the One.

A Question to Sit With

When you want to get close to someone, does the outer show matter more, or what's really in your heart?
